Welcome to the Sport and Fitness area of the Writtle University College website. Here you will find information on activities, facilities and clubs which are available to both students and the general public.

Writtle University College offers a range of activities and facilities that enable people to stay in shape whilst studying, keep active outside of work and enjoy the physical and social aspect of sport.

Sport plays a huge part in many peoples life and its reassuring for students to know that they have the facilities on campus that will allow them to stay active as often as they need to.

The Gym and Recreation Centre

The College Recreation Centre is the heart of all sports here at Writtle. It boasts a sports hall with a viewing gallery, a squash court, a fully equipped fitness suite, functional fitness room as well as male and female changing facilities.

The sports hall allows users to play sports such as basketball, badminton and 5-a-side football. It also holds some of our fitness classes such as Circuit Training and Zumba. Students are able to use the sports facilities free of charge whilst studying with us.

The Fitness Suite, located within the Recreation Centre, contains a variety of cardiovascular and weight machines as well as a free weights area. Our new addition to the Recreation Centre is our Functional Fitness Room to provide extra space for functional workouts, core stability and stretching.

As well as the use of all of the sport facilities, a variety of fitness classes are run for our staff and students. Classes include Core Stability, BodyFit, Zumba, Yoga and Pilates.

Monday: 9.00am - 12.00pm & 4.00pm - 8.00pm
Tuesday: 9.00am - 12.00pm & 3.00pm - 8.00pm
Wednesday: 12.00pm - 8.00pm
Thursday: 12.00pm - 8.00pm
Friday: 10.00am - 8.00pm
Saturday & Sunday: 9.00am - 1.00pm

Sports Teams

The Recreation Centre also provides students with information on all the sports teams, which is regularly updated by team captains throughout the year with fixtures and related social events.

The College is home to a number of student teams, many of which are in the national leagues BUCS and SESSA. Teams currently available to students include rugby, football, netball, hockey, racquet sports, athletics, volleyball, equine, clay shooting and cheerleading.

Many of the teams train several times a week and meet in the recreation centre. Some of the highlights about being part of a sports team include the sports tours, charity raising events and Wednesday night tables, which help to make campus life more sociable.

Sports Pitches

The Writtle University College Sports Pitches are home to the football and rugby teams. The pitches are kept to the highest standard and have been commented as some of the best sports pitches in Essex. A pavilion is also available with fully heated showers, changing rooms and classrooms.

External Bookings

The facilities at Writtle University College are available for external hire; however priority is given to students throughout the academic year.

Charges include:

  • Sports Hall hire - 20 per hour
  • The Fitness Suite and squash courts are free of charge to current students and staff
  • Grass Pitch - 100
  • Grass Pitch - 75 (block bookings)
