
Writtle College is one of the largest and best-known providers of horticultural education in the United Kingdom. Our courses prepare students to enter what is now a major employment sector that plays a significant role in maintaining and improving the quality of life in town and country. You will be taught by friendly and approachable staff who are highly regarded in their field and well-connected to the horticultural industries.
Writtle has a wealth of outdoor and indoor resources which are used for teaching and learning. These include; extensive college gardens that encompass a plant collection of over 10,000 specimens and a tree collection of more than 1,200 species, a 220 hectare estate managed for crop production and conservation, an Amenity Landscape Building that enables experimental designs to be built indoors, sports fields, tropical and temperate glasshouses. The College has won numerous medals, including golds, at the prestigious RHS Chelsea Flower Shows for its gardens and exhibits.

We offer a range of courses at post-GCSE level students in Horticulture, Sports Turf and Garden Design. The wide variety of teaching resources available ensures an enriched and fun packed learning experience. Students are encouraged to enter national competitions and engage with industry at all levels whether studying part time or full time.
For many students at this Further Education level there is the opportunity to progress their studies to the range of Undergraduate courses we have on offer within the School of Horticulture. Writtle College currently offers one of the largest horticulture degree programmes in the UK, this enables undergraduates to undertake specialisms in a wide range of horticultural disciplines.

For those that wish to specialise in an area further there are excellent opportunities to study at Post Graduate level, Writtle College is one of the most famous and well-respected centres for horticultural technology and research. Postgraduate students from the College are highly regarded throughout this international industry, and often go on to work on major projects affecting the production, storage and supply of food and fuel crops across the globe.
Writtle College offers taught horticulture awards on a full and part-time basis including Horticulture, Postharvest Technology, Landscape Management and Historic Designed Landscapes.
Each award can be pursued by research, leading to an MSc, MPhil or PhD, and each can be studied on a full or part-time basis.
The College offers a range of short courses, many of these supplement the full horticultural courses and provide tailored training in areas such as Chainsaw operations, Pesticide Application and Garden Machinery techniques.
